Everything you need to know

01What Is an Anti-Discriminatory Policy?

An anti-discriminatory policy prohibits unfair treatment of employees and applicants based on protected characteristics and sets expectations for respectful conduct. It defines what counts as discrimination, harassment, and victimization, and makes clear these behaviors are unacceptable at work and in work-related settings. The policy gives everyone a shared understanding of the standards and the consequences for breaching them.

02Why Companies Need an Anti-Discriminatory Policy

Discrimination harms individuals, erodes morale, and creates serious legal liability. A written policy shows your commitment to a safe, inclusive workplace, guides managers on preventing and addressing misconduct, and gives employees confidence that complaints will be handled. It also supports your legal defense by demonstrating you took reasonable steps to prevent discrimination and provided clear reporting channels for those affected.

03What an Anti-Discriminatory Policy Should Include

Define discrimination, harassment, and victimization with practical examples, and list the protected characteristics covered. Explain the scope, including offsite events and online conduct. Detail how to report concerns, how investigations run, and how confidentiality and non-retaliation are protected. State the range of disciplinary outcomes for violations, and assign responsibility for training and enforcement so the policy is actively maintained rather than filed away.
