Everything you need to know
01What Is a Sick Leave Policy?
A sick leave policy sets out how employees take paid or unpaid time off when they are ill, injured, or caring for a sick family member. It defines how sick time accrues or is granted, notice and documentation expectations, and what conditions qualify. A clear policy ensures employees can recover without losing income or fearing penalties, while giving the company a consistent way to manage health-related absences.
02Why Companies Need a Sick Leave Policy
Many jurisdictions now legally mandate paid sick leave, so a compliant policy is often a requirement rather than a perk. Beyond compliance, it discourages people from working while contagious, protecting the wider team and reducing overall absence. A documented policy also removes ambiguity around notice and documentation, helping managers apply rules fairly and reducing disputes about whether an absence was legitimate.
03What a Sick Leave Policy Should Include
State eligibility, how sick time is earned or provided, and any accrual caps or carryover rules. Explain notice expectations, when a doctor's note is required, and which family members are covered for care. Address how sick leave interacts with PTO, protected leave, and local sick-leave laws. Include a confidentiality note on health information and clarify what happens to unused balances at year-end or separation.
