Everything you need to know
01What Is an Anti-Bullying Policy?
An anti-bullying policy prohibits repeated, unreasonable behavior directed at an employee that intimidates, degrades, or undermines them. Unlike harassment, bullying need not target a protected characteristic; it includes conduct like persistent belittling, exclusion, unjustified criticism, or abuse of authority. The policy defines bullying, distinguishes it from legitimate management, and sets out how employees can report and resolve it safely.
02Why Companies Need an Anti-Bullying Policy
Workplace bullying drives absenteeism, stress-related illness, and turnover, and it can quietly destroy team morale and productivity. Because bullying often falls outside formal harassment laws, a dedicated policy fills the gap and signals that this conduct is unacceptable regardless of who does it. It protects employee wellbeing, gives targets a clear path to raise concerns, and helps managers distinguish firm leadership from abusive behavior.
03What an Anti-Bullying Policy Should Include
Define bullying with examples and clarify that reasonable performance management is not bullying. Cover in-person and online conduct, including messaging and email. Provide confidential reporting options, an impartial investigation process, and support resources for affected employees. Commit to non-retaliation and outline consequences up to termination. Encourage informal resolution where appropriate, and require training so managers and staff recognize and prevent bullying.
