Everything you need to know

01What Is an OSHA Workplace Safety Policy?

An OSHA workplace safety policy aligns your safety practices with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's federal standards for US employers. It documents how you identify hazards, train workers, record injuries, and comply with applicable OSHA regulations for your industry. The policy connects your general safety commitments to specific legal obligations, giving employees and inspectors a clear picture of how the company meets federal requirements.

02Why Companies Need an OSHA Workplace Safety Policy

OSHA compliance is a legal requirement for most US employers, and violations can bring significant fines and shutdowns. A documented policy shows good-faith compliance, guides consistent hazard control, and supports the recordkeeping OSHA expects. It also protects employees' rights to a safe workplace and to report concerns without retaliation, while giving managers a reliable reference during audits or inspections.

03What an OSHA Workplace Safety Policy Should Include

Reference the specific OSHA standards that apply to your industry and outline your hazard-assessment and control process. Include training requirements, injury and illness recordkeeping (such as OSHA 300 logs where applicable), and procedures for reporting recordable incidents within required timeframes. Cover protective equipment, hazard communication, employee rights, and non-retaliation. Name a safety coordinator and set a schedule for inspections and policy review.
