Everything you need to know

01What Is a Mental Health Policy?

A mental health policy is a written commitment describing how your organization supports employees' psychological wellbeing at work. It outlines available resources such as counseling, employee assistance programs, and mental health days, and it sets expectations for how managers respond to distress or disclosure. The policy frames mental health as a legitimate part of overall health, reducing stigma and giving staff a clear, confidential path to support.

02Why Companies Need a Mental Health Policy

Untreated stress, anxiety, and burnout drive absenteeism, presenteeism, and turnover, all of which carry real costs. A clear policy signals that seeking help is normal and safe, encouraging earlier support before problems escalate. It also helps managers respond consistently and lawfully, supports reasonable-accommodation obligations for mental health conditions, and strengthens your reputation as an employer that genuinely cares about its people.

03What a Mental Health Policy Should Include

Include a statement of commitment, a plain description of available resources, and clear steps for accessing them confidentially. Define manager responsibilities, such as recognizing warning signs and referring staff appropriately without diagnosing. Address confidentiality, non-discrimination, and reasonable accommodations for mental health conditions. Add guidance on workload and boundaries, plus contact details for internal and external support lines, so help is easy to find in a crisis.
