Everything you need to know
01What Is a Night Shift Policy for Women Employees in India?
This policy sets out the conditions under which women employees may work night shifts in India, along with the safety, consent, and facility measures the employer must provide. Because state laws and factory or shops-and-establishments rules govern night work for women, the policy documents compliance with those requirements, including transport, security, and grievance mechanisms, so night operations run lawfully and safely.
02Why Companies Need This Policy
Indian labor law increasingly permits women to work night shifts, but usually only when employers meet strict safety and consent conditions. A written policy demonstrates compliance with state notifications and the applicable Shops and Establishments or Factories Act rules, reduces legal risk, and shows genuine commitment to employee safety. It also gives women employees confidence that transport, security, and grievance protections are guaranteed rather than optional.
03What This Policy Should Include
Require written and voluntary consent, and prohibit forcing night work. Guarantee safe door-to-door transport with a security escort, adequate on-site security, lighting, and CCTV. Ensure a minimum number of women per shift and never a lone woman worker. Provide rest areas and restrooms, and integrate the POSH internal committee for grievances. Reference the specific state rules and note any age or health considerations and shift-rotation limits.
