01What Is the Reference Check Checklist?
A reference check checklist standardizes the conversations you have with a candidate's former managers and colleagues. It covers confirming the reference's relationship to the candidate, verifying dates and role, and asking consistent questions about performance, strengths, and areas for growth. Rather than a casual chat, it turns each reference call into structured evidence that either confirms or challenges what you learned during interviews.
02Why Use a Reference Check Checklist
References only add value if you ask everyone the same meaningful questions. A checklist prevents vague, feel-good calls that tell you nothing and instead surfaces concrete patterns across multiple referees. It also keeps you compliant by focusing questions on job-relevant behavior. When two references independently raise the same concern, a structured record makes that signal impossible to overlook in the final decision.
03How to Use This Reference Check Checklist
Ask the candidate for references who observed their work directly, ideally including a former manager. Confirm each person's relationship and the dates they worked together. Ask the same core questions to every reference so answers are comparable, and probe specific examples rather than accepting generalities. Note responses verbatim where possible. Weigh the pattern across references rather than reacting to a single comment.
